Wheel speed information is essential to many vehicle systems and to accurate ABS performance testing.
Sensor function
A wheel speed sensor detects the wheel's rotational frequency and supplies the signal to the acquisition unit. In the test example described in the source, emergency braking begins at 40 km/h. As ABS alternately applies and releases braking, wheel speed measurements capture the transitions between locking and rotation, providing the data needed for evaluation.
Installation locations
For front wheels, the sensor head is generally attached to the steering assembly and the toothed ring to the hub so it rotates with the wheel. For rear wheels, the sensor head is attached to the rear axle bracket and the ring to the drive shaft.
- Maintain an air gap of approximately 1 mm between the sensor head and toothed ring to avoid incorrect outputs.
- Mount the sensor firmly so braking vibration does not disturb the signal.
- The original article recommends lubrication before installation to protect the sensor from dust, splashed water and mud.
