Fuel consumption test methods and measuring equipment

Fuel consumption influences vehicle running costs and is also measured in assessments of vehicle emissions. Two common forms of measurement are constant-speed consumption per 100 km and driving-cycle consumption.

Test methods

  1. Constant-speed testing: drive in the highest gear over a specified distance on a flat, firm road at different steady speeds. Record fuel use and average runs in opposite directions to obtain consumption per 100 km at each speed.
  2. Driving-cycle testing: drive a specified representative route using constant speed, acceleration and deceleration. Some procedures also include starting and idling. Convert the total to consumption per 100 km.

Measuring equipment

Although both methods can be performed on the road, many inspection centres lack a suitable test site. Laboratory simulation on a chassis dynamometer is therefore common. Portable onboard fuel consumption equipment supports actual road tests and provides a means of studying consumption and emissions in real operating environments.

Advantages of portable onboard systems

Portable systems are independent of laboratory conditions and can measure different types of vehicle, particularly those unsuitable for a chassis dynamometer or laboratory test. They also obtain information from actual operating conditions, allowing engineers to analyse the characteristics of vehicles in use.

Luoyang Naiou Electric develops and manufactures portable fuel consumption systems and associated sensors for vehicle road testing. Please leave an enquiry or contact customer service for details.
