Handling stability testing systems: components and measurement principle

Slalom and evasive manoeuvres in vehicle review videos offer a subjective impression of handling. Manufacturers and testing organisations use objective measurement and analysis to obtain quantitative handling stability results.

System components

The system combines a gyroscope, steering wheel adapter, GPS speed sensor, a data acquisition unit connected to vehicle sensors, a PC and handling evaluation software.

  1. Gyroscope: a compact three-axis sensor with a serial interface for sending test data to the acquisition unit.
  2. Data acquisition unit: an expandable multichannel system with a 10 ms scan interval for all channels. Data can be stored directly on a CF card and transferred to the PC by USB.
  3. Steering wheel adapter: a torque and angle transducer with the required measurement range and accuracy.
  4. GPS speed sensor: the source specifies speed measurement accuracy of 0.01 km/h and a sampling period of 10 ms.
  5. Signal amplifier: amplifies low-level steering angle and torque signals for the acquisition system.
  6. Post-processing software: provides operator interaction, automatically processes stored handling test data and evaluates performance against the applicable standards.
  7. PC: runs the manufacturer's analysis software and receives acquisition data through USB for field post-processing.

Measurement principle

The gyroscope measures body roll angle, yaw rate and lateral acceleration in real time. The GPS sensor measures longitudinal vehicle speed. The steering adapter measures steering wheel angle and applied torque.

During road testing, the system receives, monitors, stores and replays the signals representing handling stability variables. Differential analogue sensor signals are supplied to the expandable multichannel acquisition unit for numerical processing and real-time display on a wide, high-brightness colour LCD. Stored data can also be transferred through a serial port to the PC for rapid post-processing.
