A steering force/angle instrument measures steering-wheel operating force and angle during complete-vehicle testing. More advanced systems support extended continuous recording, waveform display and online printing.
Operating procedure
Securely mount the instrument on the vehicle's steering wheel with all three mounting feet at equal length and tighten the locking bolts.
- Switch on power. Before a new test, press Clear to remove the previous maxima and user-stored values. The instrument then measures torque and angle in real time.
- During testing, press Page to alternate between torque in N·m and force in N. Force is calculated from torque and the steering-wheel diameter.
- Press Peak to stop measurement and display maximum torque and angle. Page cycles through maximum torque with its associated angle, torque at maximum angle with that angle, and ten user-stored groups. Send transmits the displayed values to the test recorder.
- Press Peak again to exit peak display and resume normal testing.
- Save may be pressed at any time to store the current values, up to ten groups.
- Send may be pressed at any time to transmit results to the recorder.
General technical requirements
- Clear nameplate and markings.
- A correct, legible digital display retaining the indicated value for at least 8 s. Printed and displayed values must agree and include units.
- Reliable electrical operation and no loose mechanical parts.
- Effective, adjustable calibration mechanisms.
- Steering-force zero drift: no greater than 2d.
- Steering-force threshold: no greater than 2d.
- Permissible steering-force indication error: ±2% F.S.
- Steering-force indication variation: ±2% F.S.
- Permissible angle indication error for pointer instruments: ±5°.
- Permissible angle indication error for digital instruments: ±3°.
