Brake response time testing: operating principle and installation

Brake response time is the delay between the driver pressing the brake pedal and the vehicle developing braking action. Excessive delay creates a safety risk, so a dedicated system is used to measure it accurately.

Operating principle

Strain-gauge pressure sensors are inserted into brake chamber air lines and a pedal sensor is fitted to the brake pedal. Start the engine and bring reservoir pressure to the manufacturer's specified maximum. The driver presses the pedal rapidly within 0.2 s and holds it. The main unit records instantaneous values from each channel and starts timing while checking whether pressure has stabilised.

When pressure reaches a stable value, timing stops. After the driver releases the pedal, the pedal sensor triggers timing again. The instrument records the interval until pressure falls to 10% of the stable value, providing stable brake pressure, brake coordination time and release time.

System features

  1. Accurate response-time measurements and clearly printed pressure-time curves for each measurement point.
  2. Pressure-time curve analysis helps identify faults in the vehicle's braking system.
  3. Simple operation, intuitive and accurate results, stable performance and good repeatability.

Installation procedure

  1. Keep the test vehicle stationary. Fit pressure measurement connectors at accessible points on the least favourable brake chambers, as required by the applicable test procedure.
  2. Insert pressure sensor 1 into the service-brake air inlet of the rear axle's right-hand chamber.
  3. Insert pressure sensor 2 into the air inlet of the front axle's left-hand chamber. Seal connections carefully to prevent air leakage.
  4. Secure the pedal force instrument firmly to the brake pedal so it cannot loosen or fall off during testing.
  5. Connect both pressure sensors and the pedal force sensor to the main unit and record their channel numbers.
  6. Connect the laptop and start the test system.
